Civic family

Rio Negro, Antioquía. Colombia

International experiences regarding civic education demonstrate that the countries which have reached cultural progress in terms of civics have improved their levels of coexistence. A characteristic of these experiences is that of basing education programs on the respect of mankind. People educated in civic values and in the respect for mankind are the fundamental pillars of civil society and with the advancement of this proposal they will have new and better families which will work for the community compromising for their society and their country.
On the opposite, continuing with a passive behaviour with regards to the current situation means perpetuating the coexistence of elevated rates of family violence, a low level of civic knowledge and low level of social capital, conditions which are clearly damaging for the future of a nation.
Beginning: from 01/01/2009

Motivation

The index used to measure the levels of human violence is the rate of homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data from the Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) (Interamerican Development Bank). In 2004, Colombia registered 42 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, greatly surpassing the rate of homicides in Latin America and the Caribbean in the 1990s which was 23 per 100,000 inhabitants and the world homicide rate equaling 11 per 100,000 inhabitants.  Violence will continue to be the natural way to solve conflicts among people causing more dehumanization unless we don’t start to teach the instrumental needs required to solve conflicts inside the family. Directly linked to the high rate of family violence in our country there is also a low level of civic understanding and low social capital. The coexistence of these three conditions further worsens the problem because there cannot be a peaceful solution to conflicts without civic understanding. This gap in knowledge has to be immediately filled through an education program in harmony with the reality of the Colombian families.

Mission

Educate families with a history of violence on the theoretical and practical fundamentals of democracy, human rights and civics as the instruments for the peaceful solution to conflict.
